#makeITsafePH : How to stay safe from Social Media Hacking

Online Safety and Security

The Internet, truly, is a powerful tool. It can be used to promote your business, gain new friends, and stay in touch with the old ones. It is also a source of entertainment. But like most things in this world, there is always “another side of the coin.” The Internet is one of the most dangerous places, especially if you do not know what you are doing.

social media safety and security

When we use our social media accounts let us #makeITsafePH because we know posting everything about our private lives can make others do cyberbullying. Social media hacking is very common nowadays especially for those preteens and teenagers since this generation of new technologies expanded.

Think Before You Click

1. Before you post something on the web, ask these questions to yourself:

Would you want your parents or grandparents to see it?

Would you want your future boss to see it?

Once you post something on the web, you have no control of who sees your posts.

2. Your friends depend on you to protect their reputation online. Talk to your friends about this serious responsibility.

3. Set your post to “private.” In this way, search engines will not be able to scan that post.

4. Avoid using names. Names are easy for search engines to scan.

5. If you feel that a post can affect you or other’s reputation, ask the one who posted it to pull it down or report it as inappropriate.

All adults may it be the parents or older family members must be aware of the risks of social media to their children or younger siblings. That’s the reason why I support the #makeITsafePH campaign of Globe Telecom which promotes online safety, cybersecurity and cyberwellness among Filipinos.
We are all responsible for the welfare of the children and teens posting online. We need to be vigilant on how to protect our loved ones from the dangers of the internet.

#makeITsafePH campaign Background

Hootsuite, a US-based social media management platform, has released its “Digital in 2018” report of social media and digital trends around the world.
The report revealed that the Philippines now has 67 million Internet users, with all of them active on social media. This widespread use of the internet gives rise to the emergence of internet-related crimes such as rape, theft, bullying and piracy which made the public, especially the youth, very vulnerable.
Because of this, Globe Telecom, being a purveyor of digital lifestyle, came out with the #makeITsafePH cybersecurity and cyberwellness campaign to educate consumers about online threats and what they can do to avoid becoming a victim.
The campaign also teaches the public proper online etiquette so that they would not become a source of such deplorable behavior.
