New Cinematheque in Davao
When Davao Bloggers familiarization tour explores downtown, one of our itineraries is to visit the newly opened cinematheque in Davao, I’m glad Davao has this new venue accessible to everyone to watch film archives of classic films and contemporary Filipino films, independent films, mainstream movies and foreign movies.
I also learned that cinematheque Davao is the second
operational cinematheque in the country that was inaugurated last June 29, 2012.
The first cinematheque was launched in Baguio City last Sept. 2011.
“The opening of this new cinematheque will augur well for the emerging role of Davao City as one of the leading centers of culture and the cinematic arts not only in the Philippines, but throughout the Southeast Asian region as well,” according to Chairman Santos
Emerging Davaoenos aspiring to become filmmakers will surely
benefit in this new center for they also offer workshops and symposiums on
directing, scriptwriting, editing, cinematography, and all other aspects of filmmaking.
A statue of the late National Artist Lino Brocka was built in
front of the building in homage to one of the pillars of Philippine Cinema and
recognition of his well-known cinematic achievements.

The new cinematheque is located on Palma Gil Street, in a building donated by the city government
of Davao.
